An archive differs from a pile of files in one property: retrievability by someone who was not there. Masters in known formats, named by system, described by metadata, held in more places than one. Every studio accumulates; the archive is the discipline that turns accumulation into memory.

Its value compounds in directions storage never anticipates: the rebrand that needs the original vectors, the anniversary film cut from twenty years of rushes, the dispute settled by a dated file. Digital work is fragile in a way film cans were not, formats rot, drives die, links break, so the archive is an active practice: migrate, verify, duplicate, on schedule.
