Aspect ratio

The proportion of width to height in a frame. A creative decision before a technical one: 2.39:1 promises a different story than a square.

Ratios carry memory. 2.39 arrives trailing decades of cinema and promises spectacle; 4:3 recalls television and home footage; the square insists on the object; 9:16 belongs to one hand holding a phone. Choosing a ratio is borrowing a register before any image exists.

The decision cascades: wider frames want horizontal blocking and negative space, taller ones stack meaning vertically. On this site, the slots themselves fix ratios, which is why footage is planned for the surface it will live in. Changing ratio in the edit is not resizing; it is recomposition, one shot at a time.
