Buffering
Loading a piece ahead of playback so a slow line does not interrupt. The pause that reveals the machinery.
Buffering is playback's safety margin: seconds fetched ahead so the stream can cross gaps in the connection without stumbling. Done well it is perfect invisibility, the machinery working precisely so that no one ever thinks of the machinery.
The spinner is the contract breaking in public, and the audience bills the work for it, not the network. The maker's share of prevention is real: bitrates that leave headroom, openings light enough to start immediately, files structured so the player can begin before it has understood everything. The viewer's patience is a budget spent in silence.
