Distinctiveness

Being recognisable as yourself before being compared to anyone. The property of assets, colours, marks, voices, that shortcut identification.

Distinctiveness answers an earlier question than differentiation: not why choose us, but simply, who is this? Colours, shapes, sounds and phrasings that identify the brand instantly, without the name in view, are its distinctive assets, and they work by consistency far more than by originality.

The evidence-based school of marketing holds distinctiveness above differentiation for good reason: minds file by recognition first. The practice is asset discipline, one gold, one voice, one compositional habit, repeated until the style itself signs the work. A frame from our films should be attributable before the wordmark appears; that attributability is the asset.
