Establishing shot

The wide frame that tells you where you are before the story moves in close. Orientation offered once, so it need not be explained again.

The establishing shot is a contract of orientation: here is the geography, the scale, the weather of what follows, so every closer shot can spend itself on people rather than logistics. Offered once, it lets the film move indoors and in close without the audience ever feeling lost.

Its discipline is generosity without lingering: state the world, then leave it. Modern grammar sometimes withholds it deliberately, opening close and disorienting on purpose, but that is spending the convention, not ignoring it.
