Jump cut

A cut forward within the same shot, breaking the illusion of continuous time. Roughness on purpose: the seam is the statement.

The jump cut breaks the crossing rules on purpose: two moments of the same shot butted together, the subject leaping in place, continuous time visibly torn. What grammar calls an error becomes a device: impatience, instability, the record of time skipping like a damaged reel.

The seam is the statement, since the French New Wave made roughness a register: jump cuts confess that a teller is cutting, and that confession reads as honesty or nerves as context decides. Craft separates device from mistake, rhythm, repetition, intent. One jump is an accident; a pattern of them is a voice.
