Loyalty
The habit of choosing the same thing when others are offered. Earned by keeping promises, not by rewarding points.
Loyalty is a habit resting on a history. Each kept promise lowers the cost of choosing you again, until the choice stops being a choice and becomes a default. That default is the most valuable state a brand can occupy, and it is maintained by nothing more exotic than continuing to deserve it.
Points and tiers rent the behaviour without earning the state; remove the bribe and the customer reverts. Worse, rewards teach people to ask what staying pays, a question loyalty never asks. The budget is better spent removing the disappointments that give the habit reasons to break.
