North star
The single measure a team steers by when choices conflict. Choose it carelessly and you optimise your way to the wrong place.
A north star is the tiebreaker metric: when two goods conflict, growth against quality, speed against trust, this is the number that outranks. Its value is less in measurement than in adjudication; teams stop escalating every conflict because the answer is already published.
Choose it for what it drags along. A good north star cannot rise while the thing that matters falls: weekly returning users drags quality with it, raw signups does not. The careless choice optimises brilliantly toward the wrong place, and the organisation arrives there efficiently, on schedule, together.
