Resolution

How much detail an image holds, counted in pixels. More is not always better; the right resolution is the one the surface can actually show.

Resolution is capacity, not quality: the number of samples the image holds, and therefore the largest surface it can honestly fill. Past the point where the display or the eye can resolve the difference, added pixels are weight without benefit, paid for in bandwidth and storage.

The right resolution is an engineering answer to a design question: what surface, what distance, what motion? A hero video spanning a wide screen needs what a card thumbnail never will. We derive targets from the slot's real rendered size, and hold masters one step above delivery, headroom for the crop, not vanity.
