Small caps

Capitals drawn at the height of lowercase, for emphasis without shouting. They sit within a line instead of interrupting it.

Real small caps are drawn, not shrunk: capitals rebuilt at lowercase height with their stroke weight corrected to match the text around them. Faked ones, scaled down by software, turn spindly and pale, and read as exactly what they are.

Their use is emphasis that stays in line: labels, abbreviations, a name the sentence should honour without breaking stride. Full capitals interrupt; small caps distinguish. The uppercase labels across these pages do this work, letter-spaced open so they read as texture first and words second.
