Sound design

Building the whole heard world of a film, real and invented. Half of the image is carried by the ear.

Sound design builds everything heard: the recorded, the performed and the wholly invented, layered into a world the ear accepts as one. Rooms get their tone, machines their voices, silence its texture; half of what the audience credits to the image, the ear delivered.

Half of the image is carried by the ear is testable: mute a great scene and watch it thin. Design leads feeling through the flanks, low frequencies for dread, absence for attention, transitions smoothed or struck by sound before the eye adjusts. Our loops run silent by necessity of the medium, which is exactly why their motion must do the ear's work.
