Sub-brand
A brand living under a parent, borrowing some trust and keeping its own face. Freedom and inheritance, held in tension.
A sub-brand negotiates between two gravities: the parent's trust, which it wants to inherit, and its own audience, which may need a different voice than the parent can speak in. The distance is a dial, close enough to borrow credibility, far enough to make its own promises.
Held in tension is the operating condition, not a flaw: set the dial once and revisit it as the sub-brand earns history. The failure modes sit at the extremes, a sub-brand so close it is merely a product line with pretensions, or so far the parent's equity never transfers and you have simply founded a second company with extra steps.
