Type family

A typeface and all its related styles, built to work as one. Choosing it well is choosing a whole range of voices in advance.

A family is a typeface with its relatives drawn to one logic: weights, italics, sometimes a serif and sans built on shared bones. Choosing a broad family early is buying vocabulary in advance, voices for headline, body, caption and aside that are guaranteed to agree.

These pages run on one family in two cuts, display and text, and the pairing behaves because it was designed to. Mixing unrelated faces can be done well, but it is a marriage negotiated in public. A family settles the negotiation before the first page is laid.
