Underexposure

Less light than convention asks: shadows deepen, colour thickens, the image leans toward secrecy. A tool until detail dies.

Deliberate underexposure pulls the image toward the dark end of its range: blacks gain mass, highlights calm, the frame acquires the privacy of evening. A face half-lost is a statement no dialogue makes. The look of dread, memory and noir lives a stop or two under.

The boundary is information: shadows that still hold texture are atmosphere; shadows crushed to empty black are deletion, and compression finishes what the exposure began. The protection is a master exposed with intent but not bravado, darkness shaped in the grade, where the decision is reversible, rather than gambled at capture.
