Anamorphic glass squeezes a wide world onto a narrower frame, to be unsqueezed in finishing, a bargain struck with film stock decades ago that left fingerprints the eye learned to love: horizontal streak flares, oval bokeh, a gentle waist in the geometry.

The accent of the epic is exact: those artefacts arrive trailing every widescreen memory the audience owns, which is why digital cinema, no longer needing the squeeze, still pays for the glass. The lesson generalises: a format's imperfections, grain, flare, ovals, become its signature, and signatures outlive the constraints that made them.
