Aspect fit

Fitting an image inside a frame without cropping, letterboxing the gaps. Respecting the picture over filling the space.

Aspect fit is deference: the image arrives whole, untouched by the frame's opinion, and the mismatch is absorbed as empty margins rather than cropped content. Its sibling, fill, makes the opposite promise, a full frame at the price of edges the composition loses.

Respecting the picture over filling the space is a per-surface judgement: a client's logo, a poster, a composed still deserve fit, nothing about them is ours to trim.
