Marketing 044

Category

The mental shelf a product is filed under. Win the category and you become the default; miss it and you explain yourself forever.

The category is the question the buyer asks before they ask about you: what is this thing? Minds shop by shelf, then by brand. Land on the wrong shelf and every strength must be explained; land on the right one and the shelf does half the selling.

Category is a choice, not a fact: the same studio can be filed under agency, production house or storytelling studio, and each shelf carries different neighbours, prices and expectations. Sometimes the boldest move is naming a shelf that did not exist, but only if you can afford the years of teaching it.
