The frame filled by a face or a detail. Intimacy by force: the audience must look at what you hold this near.

The close-up is film's most invasive instrument: a face at a scale no social distance permits, every flicker legible, nowhere for performance to hide. Intimacy by force means the audience cannot politely look away; the film has decided this face, now, is the entire world.

Force demands rationing: the close-up spends attention like the palette's rarest colour, and a film shot all in close-ups has no near, only loud. Its power is positional, arriving after wider frames as an escalation. Cut to it exactly when the scene turns, and the face becomes the event; arrive early and the turn has nowhere to go.
