A shot away from the main action and back, to bridge time or add a beat. The glance that lets an edit breathe.

The cutaway steps briefly aside: away from the main action, to the window, the listener, the street, and back. In the blink, time may compress, a performance may be trimmed, an edit's seam may vanish; the glance away is the editor's room to manoeuvre.

The glance that lets an edit breathe is also rhythm: relentless attention exhausts, and the aside is a held rest. Craft requires the cutaway be motivated, something worth the glance, because the audience notices being managed by a shot that exists only to hide a splice. The best asides add a beat of meaning while quietly saving the take.
