A close detail cut in, like a hand or a clock face. The film pointing at exactly one thing.

The insert is the film pointing: a detail enlarged to fill the frame, the hand pocketing the key, the name on the envelope, the second hand at ten to twelve. It is emphasis in its purest cinematic form, and it manufactures significance mechanically; whatever is inserted, matters.

That reliability is its risk: an insert is a promise, and details enlarged without consequence teach the audience to stop trusting the pointing. Production knows inserts as the shots that save the day in the edit and are forgotten on set; the discipline is shooting them on purpose, for the story's exact needs, not as afterthought coverage.
