The named, agreed artefact a project promises: this file, in this format, at this size, by this date. Where scope stops being conversation.
Deliverables are the project's nouns: not branding but a logo suite in these formats, not a film but a 60-second master plus three cutdowns and a vertical. Naming them converts an atmosphere of expectation into a checklist two parties can verify, which protects both.
The craft is exhaustiveness at the edges: formats, dimensions, colour spaces, font licences, source files or not, rights and usage windows. Every dispute we have ever seen between studio and client lived in an unnamed deliverable. The list is unglamorous and it is the contract's true body; the prose around it is manners.
