Focal point

The one place a composition is built to deliver the eye. Everything else is approach, frame or rest.

A focal point is hierarchy at its most spatial: contrast, scale, position and the gazes of pictured figures all conspire to land attention on one spot. The reader arrives there without instruction, which is the proof it exists. Two focal points of equal force are a tie, and ties read as noise.
