Grid

The invisible architecture beneath a page. It decides where the eye rests before the reader knows they are being led. We build one for every surface, then break it only on purpose.

A grid is a set of decisions made once, so a hundred later decisions become automatic. Column widths, gutters, margins and a baseline: agree on these and every new page starts half designed. The reader never sees the lines, but they feel the agreement between pages, the sense that someone measured before they spoke.

In the studio a grid is drawn before any content exists, and it is broken knowingly or not at all. A full-bleed image that ignores the columns lands as an event precisely because everything around it obeys. Break the grid casually and the reader stops trusting the page without knowing why.
