Margin

The quiet border holding the content off the edge. Generous margins are not wasted space; they are composure.

Margins are the frame a page holds around its own content, and their generosity is read, accurately, as confidence. Text pushed to the edges says the space was expensive; deep margins say the content can afford to stand back. They also do quiet labour: somewhere for thumbs, for breath, for the eye to rest.

Margins are the first thing sacrificed when content grows, and defending them is a design act. Our layouts fix them as minimums, not suggestions. When material genuinely outgrows the page, the answer is another page, a tighter edit, or smaller type, in that order; never the margins.
