Negative space

The part of the composition you did not fill. It is not empty; it is the room the subject needs to breathe. We treat it as material, not leftover.

What surrounds a subject is doing work: it sets scale, directs the eye and gives weight to what it withholds. Treating that space as material means giving it dimensions and intent, not whatever is left when the content runs out. The pause is part of the sentence.

In practice this is the hardest budget to defend. Empty areas look like waste to anyone counting pixels, and every stakeholder has something that could fill them. But crowd the frame and everything shrinks to noise; hold the space and the one thing inside it grows. Composure on a page is mostly this.
