Perception

What people believe about the brand, which is where the brand actually exists. Reality's noisier, decisive twin.

Companies live twice: once in fact, once in the aggregate impression carried by everyone who has half-noticed them. Purchases, referrals and forgiveness are all transacted in the second life. Marketing is the discipline of tending perception without lying to it.

The operational habit is measuring the gap: what we believe we signal versus what a newcomer actually receives in five seconds. The gap is usually humbling and always actionable. Perception moves slowly and by evidence, one kept promise, one striking film, one plain testimonial at a time, which is why tending it is a practice, not a campaign.
