Texture

The felt surface of a design: grain, paper, noise, weave, real or suggested. What keeps flatness from reading as emptiness.

Screens ship perfectly smooth, and perfect smoothness reads as nothing in particular. Texture returns a surface to the senses: grain over an image, the tooth of a paper stock, a background that is almost, not quite, flat. The eye registers material before it reads a single word.

The dose is everything: texture should be felt as warmth and discovered only on inspection. Our film-grain layer follows exactly this law, applied as a finishing surface, tuned to disappear into atmosphere. When texture is noticed first, it has become decoration; when a page merely feels less digital, it is working.
