Asymmetry

Balance without mirroring: unequal weights resolved by placement. The composition of movement, tension and modern pages.

Asymmetry abandons the mirror but not the scales: a large mass near the centre balanced by a small one far out, text against image, weight against space. The eye is given a journey rather than a ceremony, and the page feels inhabited rather than presented.

It is harder to judge than symmetry because nothing verifies it but the eye: the composition balances when it stops asking for adjustment. Most working layouts, this site's included, are asymmetric by default, ordered by grid and hierarchy rather than mirrors, spending symmetry only where occasion demands ceremony.
