Balance by mirroring: each side answering the other across an axis. The composition of authority, ceremony and calm.

Symmetry is order the eye verifies instantly: fold the layout and the halves agree. It carries connotations older than design, temples, thrones, title pages, and so reads as formality, stability, address. A centred composition is a claim that the content deserves ceremony.

Its cost is inertia: perfect mirroring offers the eye nowhere to travel and can embalm a page. The working use is selective, symmetry for the moments of address, a hero, an invitation, a closing statement, broken deliberately elsewhere so the stillness stays special. One asymmetric detail inside a symmetric frame is often the sharpest note available.
