Mise-en-scène

Everything placed within the frame on purpose: set, light, actor, shadow. The whole visible world of a shot, composed.

Mise-en-scène is the sum of placed things: the set dressed, the light shaped, the actor positioned, the shadow allowed. It is the difference between a location and a world. Nothing in the frame is neutral; everything visible is either testimony or noise, and the director decides which.

Reading it is a learned habit: what does the room say about its occupant, what does the light say about the hour and the mood, what has been placed for the eye to find on second viewing? We compose pages the same way, every element in the viewport either builds the world or leaks it, and there is no third category.
