Wrap

The end of shooting, called out loud: the set struck, the cast released, the film now living only in its footage.

Wrap is a threshold with a ritual: that's a wrap, applause, the strike beginning behind the words. From this moment the film can gain nothing new; everything it will ever be must already exist in the cards and the sound rolls. Production's thousand possibilities collapse into an archive.

The professional weight of the word is verification: wrap is called on a location only when the shot list is confirmed dead, because returning is somewhere between costly and impossible. Hence the checked gate, the reviewed footage, the producer's last look at the list. Celebration is the visible half of wrap; the audit is the half that matters.
